The last few years have been tough for coach operators, but Worth’s Motor Services was determined to pull through the pandemic in order to celebrate its 100 year anniversary. Richard Sharman visited the Oxfordshire operator to take a nostalgic look back

The A44 is a roller coaster of hills, dips and straight sections offering views for miles around as it climbs towards the highest point in Oxfordshire. As you encounter one of these dips and climb the other side you approach the historic and picturesque village of Enstone.

Coach drivers who regularly do day trips from London to Stratford-upon-Avon will know this village well, as the sight of the coach depot sat right next to the A44 marks the half way point between leaving the M40 and arriving in the Bard’s town, and similarly, returning home to the Capital. Worth’s Garage, which has provided fuel and food to the local community for decades, almost stands as a guardian of the village, being situated just behind the white gates that inform you that you are entering Enstone.

Starting out

Director Paul Worth has spent the last few years researching the vast history of Worth’s Motor Services, by going through the company’s archives and talking to his father and local residents. “We have been serving the village of Enstone and the surrounding communities since 1922 when Thomas Worth, known as Dickie, opened a garage here,” he explained. “We do not know the exact start date, but we use his birth date which is 8 February as a start-up date. We know he was going long before November of that year as a local resident recalls going to him for a puncture repair.
