A group of 20 managers from the Guild of British Coach Operators (GBCO) have recently completed a Management 1st training and development programme to enhance their managerial and coaching skills.

The courses were organised by People 1st, the workforce development organisation for the bus and coach industry.

The programme was aimed at developing managers within the coach and bus industry and allowed delegates from 10 different companies – including Henley-in-Arden-based Johnson’s Coaches – to learn how to improve their management skills. It was also designed to teach them how to better apply these skills in the context of the coaching industry.

The organisers recognise that although practical skills are important, developing the softer skills and confidence to manage a team is a different entity.

GBCO Administrator Richard Delahoy explained: “Developing our existing and upcoming managers is vital to the future of our businesses. The Guild already facilitates training for drivers and engineers and so we were delighted to work with People1st to provide courses tailored to our specific needs. Feedback from the first two courses has been excellent, delegates saying they are now more confident and better organised to cope with the pressures of their demanding jobs.”
