A discussion at the recent COP26 conference prompted Jonathan Welch to look a bit more closely at Kolkata’s bus network
There were many varied events, discussions and talks taking place at COP26, and whilst some of them, such as the First Bus event covered in last week’s issue, were directly related to the UK’s transport sector, others provided an opportunity to glimpse what is happening elsewhere in the world. A city which perhaps few would think of when talking about electric buses is Kolkata. Yet as with many major cities across the globe, the capital of the Indian province of West Bengal, home to some 4.5 million within its city limits and over 14 million in its wider metropolitan area, has already begun to electrify its bus fleet. An event hosted by the West Bengal Chamber of Commerce at the COP26 summit addressed the issue of electrification of the city’s public and private transport networks.
