The item in the last issue’s International News about Japan’s ASA Railway operating a fleet of three ‘DMV’ road-rail buses prompted some searching around the depths of the internet for information on some other similar vehicles that have been tried, with varying degrees of success, over the years. The concept of buses which can run on road or rail is not new, having been tried by the London Midland and Scottish Railway using a half-cab Cravens-bodied Karrier single-deck bus in the early 1930s. The 26-seat bus was said to have achieved 8mpg on the road, and double that in rail mode.
