Nick Larkin reports on an event that will bring classic buses back to London’s streets
Classic buses – up to 35 of them – will be crowding onto a legendary London bus route for a running day on Sunday 26 March. Route 101, from Wanstead to Woolwich via Manor Park, East Ham and Beckton, has been operating in various forms since 1914.
At one point, with buses running through East Ham every minute, it was London’s most frequent bus service. Vehicles used over the years include prewar Leyland Titans and AEC STLs, wartime utility Guy Arabs, RT-class buses and latterly Wright Gemini-bodied Volvos of Go-Ahead London.
