ITALY
Arriva Italia is undertaking trials with Caetano’s H2.City Gold. The vehicle was presented during an event held in Trieste, where the bus was demonstrated on the streets of the city. Equipped with a Toyota fuel cell and co-branded with Toyota since last year, the 12m bus offers a claimed range over 400km.
Nuno Lago de Carvalho, Chief Commercial Officer of CaetanoBus, commented: “It is a very important step and opportunity for us to show and raise awareness for H2 mobility in Italy, where our electric hydrogen-powered buses can contribute and play an important role in the decarbonisation of public transport in Italian cities, as well as improving the quality of life of the future generations through our environmentally friendly mobility solutions. Italy is a key market for us and it is good to be aligned with the operators in the fight against climate change and help people travel in a greener way.”
Angelo Costa, CEO of Arriva Italia, commented: “As reiterated recently in a study commissioned by Arriva Italia, the region has a bus fleet that is newer than the Italian average, but it now sees the need for investments in alternative propulsion vehicles to enable greater environmental sustainability. The transition from carbon dioxide-emitting forms of power supply to green traction sources has now become fundamental. The planned replacement of about 330 vehicles by 2026, of which 45% will be fitted with alternative propulsion (electric, methane/biomethane and, albeit experimentally, hydrogen) will make it possible to save up to 5,400 tons of CO2 per year once fully operational for the same kilometric distance.”
Caetano said the trial represents a significant moment, as it marks the first use of its hydrogen buses in Italy, strengthening its presence and positioning in this strategic European market.
