With the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations taking place this week, what better open-top bus tour to take than the one that presents her most favourite place to be; Richard Sharman finds out why
The United Kingdom has some beautiful countryside, towns and cities to visit and it is fair to say that Windsor ranks very highly on that list. Pre-pandemic at least, it was on every foreign tourist’s list of places to visit, alongside the likes of London, Blenheim Palace, Stonehenge, Bath and Edinburgh Castle.
The walk from the Alma Road car park to the town centre is picturesque a one, with peaceful Alexandra Gardens to left of the coach park and the Diamond Jubilee Fountain across the road, which is a big attraction in the warmer months. As you walk towards the castle you have the River Thames, which is normally populated by a large number of swans being fed by tourists, and this visit was no exception. French Brothers River Cruises also depart from this side of the river.
As you approach the town, Windsor Castle is directly in front of you, but more importantly for tour bus operators, the Thames Street Theatre Royal bus stop is also right in front of you, and just around the corner from Windsor & Eton Riverside railway station. This is stop one of 10 of the Tootbus Windsor Tour, Toot of course standing for The Original Open Tour and being owned by the RATP Group.
The peak vehicle requirement (PVR) for this tour, at this time of the year on a 60-minute frequency, is two, meaning there is always a vehicle on the stop to attract customers to the tour. In high season, from July to August, the tour operates every 30 minutes and thus the PVR increases.
