Bristol Park St 2 CM903 EARLY POSTCARD
A double deck Bristol Tramways horse bus, to which two trace (extra) horses were added to climb the hill. Horse buses commenced in the 1880s. Quite apart from the gradient, this route ran from what became the Centre to Clifton Village. Bristol Tramways was among the largest transport concerns in the country with an extensive tram network – but Clifton residents objected to trams while horse buses were acceptable as they looked like carriages! Uniquely, this city street therefore had buses not trams.
The Centre was so named after part of the docks and river were covered over to form the hub of the tram network. The location become universally known as the ‘Tramway Centre.’ When buses took over just before the Second World War, the area became simply known as ‘The Centre.’ Bristolians still refer to being ’On the Centre’ today.
