Jonathan Welch speaks to Scott Souter about the latest afternoon tea tour to hit the streets of Edinburgh, and the company’s plans for expansion across the UK
Edinburgh is no stranger to the pages of CBW, and it is only last summer that we reviewed the two main open-top sightseeing operators. Recently, a new option has become available for visitors wanting to see Scotland’s capital city: Superbus. Using a pair of ex-megabus Gold Van Hool sleeper coaches, Superbus offers a modern take on the afternoon tea tours which have proven themselves popular in a number of cities, often using classic vehicles.
The entrepreneurial names behind the operation will be of little surprise. I had a chat with Managing Director Scott Souter about the new venture, before taking a trip one afternoon shortly after the launch to see how the new tour was settling down, and to sample the delights on offer whilst taking in the now-familiar sights of Scotland’s world-renowned capital city.
“Afternoon teas are in fashion at the moment,” explained Scott, “and with us being a bus family, we said ‘why not have a go too?’ and see how it goes. Buses are in our blood. That’s how it came about, and it just so happened that we knew that there were the fantastic megabus Gold buses which were available. We thought it was a great opportunity to use them instead of them sitting unused. It’s better to have then out there working than sitting in a yard.
