The return of a coach which was being used to carry passengers unlawfully has been refused
East of England Traffic Commissioner (TC) Nick Denton has refused the application for the return of a coach which was impounded after it was found to be being operated unlawfully by the DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency).
On 23 May this year, DVSA Traffic Examiner (TE) Anita Barwell impounded 53-seat coach RIG 1413 at the DVSA’s site at Crick, Northamptonshire. The vehicle was being driven by a Mr Mohammed Islam with 44 passengers aboard, but was not displaying an operator’s licence disc. DVSA had previously written to Mr Islam, on 22 September 2021 and again on 13 May 2022, to warn him that he appeared to be operating without a licence and to warn him that the vehicle could be impounded if he continued to do so.
When stopped, Mr Islam stated that he was not carrying passengers for hire and reward and that the people on board were his staff, employees of Yasar Transport, on a staff outing. However, TE Barwell spoke to some of the passengers and ascertained that those on board were managers of KFC franchisee Demipower Ltd, on their way to Liverpool for a gala dinner. The Traffic Examiner was given the contact details of a Richard Campbell at Demipower, who told her that the company had booked the coach through an online broker, paying £1,700 for the round trip.
