Vinyls on buses and coaches are now so widely used for everything from company logos to advertising wraps and entire liveries that they are often taken for granted. But applying them can be an art in itself. Richard Walter finds out how new company Gordana Graphics has established its business since setting up in 2022 and what the process of wrapping involves
For many years, bus and coach companies employed sign writers to meticulously paint detailing onto buses. Over the years the use of vinyls increased from fleet names, fleet numbers and legal lettering to route branding, sections of livery and eventually to full advertising vinyl and mega rear wraps. Some companies even use vinyls to create complete liveries rather than have their vehicles fully spray painted.
Vinyls are used widely on all forms of public transport including trains, planes, ferries and taxis. They are tough materials and can survive all sorts of weather as well as going through daily machine and hand washes. Likewise, they are popular as they can be easily removed without badly damaging the panels beneath. Back in June at the height of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, a number of heritage buses were hired and wrapped to each represent a decade from her 70-year reign. The vinyls were removed in less than a week following the parade through central London demonstrating just how versatile they can be.
