A new electric bus route will enable Dwight School in London to save over 26 cubic tonnes of CO2 per year

‘Smart’ bus services and transit tech company Zeelo has launched its first fully electric bus route for school transport, operated in partnership with airport transport specialist Airsym.

Airsym will operate one of three bus routes for independent Dwight School London to support the daily school commutes of 50 students living in North London. The service is set to replace an existing route, and hopes to attract new families living in the area to adopt the school’s own transport service in place of car journeys for their daily school run.

Sam Ryan, CEO of Zeelo, commented: “Offsetting carbon emissions goes some way towards helping us meet our sustainability targets but does not resolve the issue of air quality around schools and educational campuses. We’re delighted to support Dwight School London with its CO2 reduction plans by enabling the transition of its school transport services from diesel to electric vehicles and help pave the way for all our education customers to switch to a net-zero transport service.”

Managing Director of Airsym Allen Jey commented: “Working with Zeelo has allowed us to secure some of our highest profile and longest-term contracts to service bus routes for both schools and corporates. We’ve been an operator partner in Zeelo’s network for over a year and are thrilled to support them on creating the first electric bus route for private school Dwight London. Together with Zeelo’s tech and our electric bus, we hope to support even more schools across the country.”

Dwight School London, one of around 200 which has been using Zeelo services since 2021, expects an annual CO2 saving of 26.45 cubic tonnes per year by making the switch to an electric bus.

Chris Beddows, Head of Dwight School London, said: “We place innovation and sustainability at the heart of our school’s mission, vision and values. We are thrilled and immensely proud to be the first school in the whole of the United Kingdom to add this electric vehicle to our fleet of school buses and our whole community is excited by this new initiative. As a school who takes pride in taking action for the betterment of the world, the electric bus will help make the world a greener place and signify to our students that the climate is something that is hugely important.”

Zeelo uses proprietary data and AI to optimise bus routes and provides private bus services to around 5% of the UK’s independent schools as well as over 200 corporate customers in e-retail, energy and the food industries. It already offers 100% carbon neutral bus services by offsetting the entire journey, but has the ambition to transition to net zero-emissions for all of its transport services by 2030.
