The history of the 24/7 Oxford Tube express coach service from Stagecoach West has been well documented in the pages of CBW over the years, but what about from a passengers perspective? Richard Sharman found out on a recent visit to the Capital
When it comes to express coach services in the post-deregulation era, it has to be recognised that Oxford Tube is one of the brands that has not just become a domestic market success, but has also grown worldwide recognition given the amount of international passengers that grace it on nearly every departure.
You are probably thinking, like I may have done until now, that the main contingent of passengers who use the Oxford-London service are dressed in suits and are on the commute to and from work and the middle of the day is exceptionally quiet. It turns out that couldn’t be further from the truth, as I found out on my recent three day trip to ‘the big smoke.’
Planning a trip
If you live in Oxford or on its outskirts, then commuting to London is easy. However this does depend on how much time you are allowing for your journey. If you need to travel in the peak period it will cost you upwards of £70 and you may have to stand on the train from Oxford station to Marylebone; leaving at 0700hrs the train arrives in the Capital at 0825hrs. An Oxford Tube service leaving Oxford’s Gloucester Green bus station at the same time gets you into Victoria at 0930hrs, although two express journeys are offered at 0530 and 0610hrs that omit four stops and run via Baker Street, returning at 1700 and 1750hrs via Marylebone, significantly reducing the journey time.
