New handbook launched to assist transport access

Martin Curtis takes an in-depth look at the new Wiltshire Inclusive Bus Project Handbook which takes accessible transport considerations to new levels of detail, produced by individuals with first-hand experience of the difficulties still encountered when using public transport

Wiltshire’s new accessibilty handbook takes the form of a 26-page printed document but is also available online and is supported by a series of videos which relate how some of the best – and worst – practices experienced by disabled people can be expanded on or overcome, and enters into a level of detail from which transport operators across the country can benefit.

Whilst produced by the User Engagement Team at Wiltshire Centre for Independent Living, and based on research from that county, the information and suggested material for improving the travel experience is certainly not confined to this area alone. The project has been led by two people who themselves experience first hand some of the difficulties of bus travel, Mary FitzMeilton and Matt Stabb, who introduce the videos, which will appear on the CBW YouTube channel soon, and have spearheaded the research.
