The DVSA has published the results of a survey into recent bus fires, which it hopes will help to reduce the number of instances through better understanding of the causes
The DVSA recently published the findings of its investigation into the causes of bus fires, which was carried out following an apparent increase in the number of high-profile fires and in the number of such events being reported. The Agency carried out a study of fires reported to it by PSV operators, as required by law, between 2020 and 2022 as part of its work to improve bus safety.
In a summary of its report, the DVSA reminded operators that where a fire does occur, by law, operators must report this, and noted a number of reports which had been submitted to it a long time after the incidents have taken place, or which have little or poor information and no record of any investigation into the root cause of the fire. It reminded operators that such incidents must be reported as soon as possible after they have taken place, and that early reporting can help to explain the sequence of events and provide valuable information in the diagnosis of the cause.
The Agency has also updated its reporting process for bus fire incidents, something it says will help it to better identify and analyse trends, and make it easier for operators to report incidents. It also warned that drivers and operators must also take heed of in-cab temperature warning lamps, having found that although most drivers and operators respond to these appropriately, some do not, and either continue to drive or return to the depot. “Bus operators must make sure their drivers understand the warning system on a vehicle before they start any journey – and get the right advice from the depot when this is reported,” says DVSA.
Correct maintenance and repairs are also vital to the safe operation of buses, the Agency reiterated.
