Transdev’s ‘Flyer’-branded routes serving Leeds Bradford Airport are to receive 15 new hybrid single-deckers as part of a £4m investment in the route. The Yorkshire-based operator is to transform the Flyer network, which links Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate with Leeds Bradford Airport, with an order for new Mercedes-Benz Citaro hybrids. Delivery is expected to take place at the end of this year.
Transdev Blazefield Managing Director Henri Rohard said: “We are delighted to confirm this substantial order for new vehicles which will revolutionise the customer experience on our Flyer network, while delivering significantly reduced emissions and higher operating efficiency.
“These exciting new buses also feature the very latest in safety technology, including cyclist and pedestrian detection systems which will make the road a safer place for everyone.
“On board each bus will be a full package of customer comfort features, including free WiFi and USB charging, next stop information displays, two wheelchair bays and a hearing loop system to make communication easier for those with a hearing disability. With the Flyer network’s role in serving Leeds Bradford Airport in mind, each bus will also offer plentiful luggage space.
“Our experience in running conventional buses with biodiesel fuels will be invaluable, as our new hybrid fleet will use specially blended biodiesel to further reduce emissions.”
Adrian Felton, Daimler Bus (UK)’s Electro-Mobility Manager for the UK and Ireland, added: “It has been a pleasure to work with the team at Transdev to develop an environmentally friendly solution for this demanding route network. We are confident the new Citaro hybrid buses will be as well-received by passengers and drivers alike.”
The buses will include regenerative braking, which recharges the roof-mounted batteries to feed the 14kW electric motor, which supports the diesel engine and reduces emissions.
The hybrid drive system is estimated by the manufacturer to save up to 8.5% in fuel consumption compared to a conventional diesel equivalent, saving around £3,000 per year in operating costs whilst benefitting from low emission bus grants worth up to 6p per kilometre.
Transdev launched its Flyer network in August 2020 in a three-way partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds Bradford Airport, with three dedicated routes links Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate with the airport seven days a week. Transdev says the service is also fully integrated with Yorkshire’s existing bus and train networks, with through ticketing to Leeds Bradford Airport from any rail station on the national network, and from departure points nationwide served by coach operators National Express and megabus.
