The gloriously-named Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Joint Board (thankfully generally known as SHMD) was well represented at the event, brining together the only four restored survivors for the first time. The two buseson the left were built by Atkinson, better known for rugged lorries, while those on the right were made by Daimler and Bristol. What they all have in common is the legendary Gardner diesel engine, which for many of its customers engendered a loyalty that approached religious devotion. PAUL WILLIAMS
