The towns of Workington and Whitehaven, along with surrounding villages, reverberated to the sound of Leyland and Volvo engines on Boxing Day with the traditional free bus service provided by the Workington Transport Heritage Trust. David Wallace reports
On 26 December 2024, the Workington Transport Heritage Trust operated two free routes, one from Whitehaven to the seaside village of St Bees and the other connecting the village of Seaton with Workington and the outlying suburb of Salterbeck. Each service route had a morning vehicle swapped out around lunchtime for another. Both routes utilised Volvo B10Ms in the morning, with K779 DAO running to St Bees and R983 XVM running on the Workington route.
Early afternoon saw two former Cumberland Motor Services Leyland Nationals grace the streets of West Cumbria, with ‘Country Cousin’ CHH 210T heading to St Bees and 51 year old former Workington based Mark 1 GRM 353L return to its spiritual home carrying passengers in its home town for the first time since 1989.
