Lothian Buses is recruiting its latest intake of apprentices. LOTHIAN BUSES

Lothian Buses marked the end of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which ran from 3 to 7 March, by announcing that applications for its engineering apprenticeship scheme are now open. The operator’s apprentice programme spans four years and provides participants with an SCQF in either Heavy Goods & Public Service Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Level 7) or Vehicle Body Repair & Alignment (Level 6). Throughout their apprenticeship, the team of trainee engineers will be supported by the company’s dedicated Training and Apprenticeship Manager and wider engineering management team within Lothian’s garages to develop their practical skills through on-the-job training. The hands-on training is complemented by classroom-based learning in partnership with GTG Training at its modern, purpose-built training centre in Newbridge.

The company’s Chief Engineer Dylan Dastey said: “At Lothian, we understand the importance of developing and shaping the technical skills required within our industry. Through our continued investment and commitment to training our own technicians who are skilled in both current and advancing technologies, we are safeguarding the future of our business for years to come.

“Our apprenticeship programme allows our young workforce to learn from a vastly experienced engineering team, where they will build a well-rounded skillset working on a variety of tasks. All with the added benefit of earning a wage while they learn.

“We are delighted to open our apprenticeship scheme to applications and are excited to welcome the next generation of engineering apprentices later in the year.”

Second Year Apprentice Engineer Dylin Izatt added: “During my training so far, I have gained a lot of new skills and invaluable experience from my colleagues. The on-the-job training is extremely rewarding. I’ve learned a lot about myself during my time at Lothian so far and developed a resiliency and perseverance when taking on new tasks. I would definitely recommend the Lothian Apprenticeship Scheme to anyone looking for a new career in Engineering.”

Applications will close on Friday 4 April, and candidates must have received, or be working towards, National 4 or above in maths, English and either a science or technical subject.
