The UK’s first example of the BYD B12. MAXSON GOH

Bus operator Uno, owned by the University of Hertfordshire, launched its new dual-door BYD B12 at a ceremony held on the university campus on 5 March. Five zero-emission B12 buses, the first of their kind in the UK, have been acquired for the newly branded Electric Shuttle service, which will run between Angerland park & ride site, The Forum, and DeHavilland Campus. The electric buses are set to gradually replace diesel models currently operating on the shuttle, such as the Mercedes-Benz Citaro, Alexander Dennis Enviro200 and Volvo B8RLE, to name a few.

BYD claims these new buses, one of which was exhibited at 2024’s Euro Bus Expo at the NEC in Birmingham, can accommodate up to 93 passengers and travel over 310 miles on a single charge; battery capacity can be specified to a maximum of 541kWh. The five buses are the first of 27 electric buses scheduled for delivery over the next 12 months, with details about the manufacturers of the subsequent batches yet to be disclosed. The next batch is expected to be ordered in the coming weeks, with delivery planned for September 2025, the final batch arriving by April 2026.
