Small bus manufacturer Mellor has unveiled its next-generation Strata, which it says has many forward-thinking design enhancements and builds upon the reliability and success of the original model, which was first launched in 2016. Key upgrades include improved accessibility, an enhanced seating layout and improved safety features, says Mellor.
The redesigned rear saloon now features a single step up from the low floor section, reduced from two steps to minimise trip hazards and enhance passenger safety. The change also increases the headroom by 100mm, says Mellor, improving overall accessibility and comfort. Additionally, the low-floor area has been extended by 266mm, allowing for four extra seats in this section of the bus, giving up to 12 seats now available in the low-floor area and space for up to two wheelchairs.
A repositioned emergency door allows for an extra seat in the rear row for the Plus and Ultra variants, optimising passenger capacity. The new Strata is still built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform, bringing with it the base vehicle’s suite of GSR2-compliant driver assistance systems, including Attention Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and Active Brake Assist. Inside, the Class 1 variants feature dual tip-up seat areas, providing four dedicated priority seats while preserving a spacious, open interior design.
CEO of Mellor Bus parent company Woodall Nicholson Group John Randerson said: “We are dedicated to enhancing our operations in the UK. The new Strata bus is designed with sustainable manufacturing in mind, protecting UK jobs and adhering to ethical procurement practices. This initiative will strengthen community connections by providing affordable and accessible transportation.”

At 2.3m wide, Mellor says the Strata can deliver fuel economy of up to 22mpg, and benefits from a 17-metre turning circle. The base Strata has a capacity of 22, whilst the Strata Plus can carry up to 26, and the Strata Ultra up to 30, all featuring a 2+2 seating layout.
“Since its launch in 2016, the Strata has delivered exactly as we envisioned,” commented Mellor Sales Director Richard Matthews. “It’s a robust, nimble, and exceptionally economical bus, designed with long-term value in mind. Some Strata customers have reported their vehicles have clocked over 500,000 kilometres in operation and continue to perform very well, proof of the outstanding build quality and low total cost of ownership that our customers can rely on.”
Mellor will showcase its 30-passenger Strata Ultra at this year’s ALBUM Conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre on 12 to 14 May.
