Maxson Goh visits Selwyns Travel in Runcorn to explore its impressive 30-year partnership with National Express
In the coach and bus industry, collaboration between businesses can lead to significant benefits, and this is something both National Express and Selwyns Travel undoubtedly understand. While the exact start date of their partnership remains unclear, both companies confidently trace it back to the early 1990s, and it continues to thrive to this day, with 150 National Express drivers employed across Selwyns’ sites. It’s a longevity that, as some might jokingly note, outlasts many marriages.
Selwyns Travel currently operate over five million scheduled miles a year on routes that include:
120 Manchester-Birmingham;
121 Blackpool-Birmingham;
170/171 Leeds-Manchester-Liverpool;
421/423 Liverpool-London;
422 Manchester-London;
424 Blackpool-London;
540 Manchester-London, and;
550/551 Liverpool-London.
But let’s rewind the clocks for just a bit. Back in 1991, Selwyns Travel acquired its Runcorn depot, a site rich in transport history, having previously operated as a British Road Services depot. In 2004 the company acquired the adjacent Grade II listed building, which was a private residence at the time. The historic property underwent a two-year extensive renovation programme consisting of both internal and external improvements, including the installation of a completely new roof. Upon completion, the building was transformed into the company’s head office, officially opening its doors in 2014. It was in this beautifully restored building that I had the pleasure of meeting Selwyns Travel Managing Director Selwyn Jones and Deputy Managing Director Billy Jones.
