Stagecoach Yorkshire’s Chesterfield depot has undergone a major transformation over the last year, and the work isn’t finished yet. CBW sent Steven Knight to find out what is happening

At the start of 2025 Stagecoach was operating a fleet of around 90 diesel-powered vehicles from its depot in the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield. Within less than six months the diesel fleet is in the minority. Now 57 electric buses have revolutionised travel in the area.

Secured as part of the Government’s ZEBRA scheme, the £31million project has also seen investment from Derbyshire Country Council and Stagecoach. If you are in the town centre, it won’t be long before an electric bus glides by. Approaching the depot at Stonegravels, less than a mile north of the city centre, the sheer size of the site is impressive. More akin to a cathedral than a humble bus depot, its history explains the size. Chesterfield is located 24 miles north of Derby and 11 miles south of Sheffield. It is the second largest settlement, after Derby, in Derbyshire.
