A new bus service linking Barnsley and Meadowhall was introduced by Stagecoach Yorkshire last weekend.
The X65 service will run from Barnsley Interchange along Sheffield Road, through Worsbrough and Birdwell, from where it will take the M1 motorway direct to Meadowhall.
John Young, Commercial Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “We’re really pleased to be introducing this new service which will expand and enhance people’s travel options, enabling Barnsley people to shop, grab a bite to eat or watch a film at Meadowhall.
“Stagecoach’s Barnsley Megarider Plus and Dayrider Plus tickets will have their area of validity extended to include Meadowhall – meaning cost-savvy shoppers heading to Meadowhall looking for a bargain will be able to travel there for a better value fare, too.
“Our Barnsley Dayrider Plus day ticket costs just £4.20 – compared to the price of a return train ticket from Barnsley to Meadowhall at £6.20 peak or £5.20 off-peak.”
Launched on July 22, the new service will only stop at key bus stops. It will run seven days a week during the school summer holidays but will continue to run at weekends after that throughout the year. The X65 will operate approximately every half-hour during Meadowhall shopping hours.
Service X65 is the latest investment in Barnsley by Stagecoach, following the introduction of a fleet of nine new £1.85 million state of the art buses for service 66 in September last year.
More recently Stagecoach introduced a new contactless payments system throughout South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire last month (June).
