The City of Wells in Somerset has gained Coach Friendly status from the CPT. The development comes after the two large attractions in the city, Wells Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace, gained coach friendly attraction status last year.

CPT South West Regional Manager, John Burch, said: “I’m delighted that the partnership in the City of Wells has now gone forward and expanded on the Coach Friendly Attraction status for the Bishop’s Palace and Cathedral.

hey have now won Coach Friendly status for the entire city, and demonstrated that the principals can be expanded to really benefit businesses and attractions across an even wider area.

“Ian Jefferies led the successful bid team who have combined forces to offer coach groups an excellent package at this beautiful Somerset destination. CPT hopes that the work undertaken to achieve the award will result in a growth in coach numbers and indeed, the actual length of coach stays, in the City. CPT will continue to liaise with City of Wells to monitor how coach traffic develops.”

Mendip District Council has agreed to remove coach parking charges in the Princes Street Coach Park (BA5 2DT) with immediate effect, while Wells Film Centre, based across the road from the city’s coach station, is offering a free ticket to drivers who bring their passengers to Wells and show their coach driver’s ID at the ticket office.

A Meet & Greet service has also been arranged, where a group of volunteers meet and greet vehicles entering Wells coach park each morning. The team give out maps, discount shopping offers to passengers, advice and information to drivers on where they can get a free meal and drink in the city.

This service requires booking in advance – contact organiser Ross at [email protected] or call 07721 523487.

A DVD also has been produced for drivers to play on route to Wells, giving information to passengers prior to arrival. Subtitles are now available in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. Operators wishing to obtain copies should email Ian on [email protected].
