Alan Payling stops off at Gloucester Services on the M5 to find a level of service, a stylish, well-designed service area and a commitment to sustainable values that is all too rare amongst those catering for the coach trade on the motorway network

In some ways I’m glad I’m not out on the road anymore. I loved being a professional driver, whether it was driving an HGV or a PSV, but if I was still cruising up and down the motorway network I would not relish having to eat at the fast food emporiums that motorway service stations have become. However, there is one pit stop that I would very much look forward to stopping at, and that is Gloucester Services on the M5 – situated between junctions 11A and 12 of the M5.

Having to digest the excess calories provided by fast food outlets will not be something to worry about at Gloucester Services, as no franchises whatsoever are allowed on the site. The food served is all sourced and prepared under the control of the company that operates Gloucester Services. If you care about the food you eat, that’s the first bit of very good news. The second bit of good news is that they serve up very fresh food on this stretch of the M5. You won’t have to worry about robots flipping burgers here – the quality of the food they serve at Gloucester Services is the company’s absolute priority. […]
