Stagecoach has announced a two-year, £50,000 partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, honouring a much-loved member of staff.
Martyn Henderson, Assistant Garage Operations Manager at the operator’s Romford garage, sadly lost his life to cancer in July 2017 – but benefited from the support Macmillan provided throughout his treatment.
The company also unveiled a Macmillan-branded ADL Enviro400 in his memory, which is set to run on route 86 between Stratford and Romford.
A close friend of Martyn, Bill Daly – currently Romford Garage Operations Manager – has played a significant role in creating the partnership.
At the unveiling, also held in Romford, Bill commented: “Martyn worked for bus and coach companies for most of his career and for Stagecoach since 2008. So, we are delighted to be honouring him in this way, with his own special bus.
“We are all looking forward to getting involved in lots of fundraising events for Macmillan over the coming months to raise money for the charity that supported Martyn throughout his treatment.”
Carole Heffernan, Macmillan Area Fundraising Manager for London, added: “Every day, over 90 Londoners hear the devastating news they have cancer. That’s enough people to almost fill a number 86 bus.
“And with that number set to possibly double by 2030, Macmillan Cancer Support will be needed more than ever to help people with cancer find their best way through.
“The partnership will see Stagecoach employees undertaking fundraising challenges and events to raise money in Martyn’s memory over the next two years.”
The fundraising initiatives will involve nine garages and around 4,000 employees.
