Alan Payling speaks to a coach tour operator who followed a creative route when it came to naming and marketing his business
So, what’s in a name? It’s probably the first thing that anyone sorts out when they set up on their own. Without a name for their business, they’re not really going to go anywhere. So, after a bit of head scratching, former driver Joe Bloggs decides to call his new operation Joe Bloggs Coaches/or Tours/or Holidays/or Executive Travel. For the Joe Bloggs’ of the coaching world, there’s a lot of sense in such a move. Many coach drivers have stepped up to start working for themselves because they have a happy customer base that travelled with them when they were an employed driver. The hope is that when Joe gets his first coach, his name emblazoned in large letters on the side will attract business that will see his new coach wheels turn a profit. One operator from Droitwich Spa at J5 M5 in Worcestershire didn’t want to see his name lit up in bright vinyl though. He had something else in mind. Something a bit creative, imaginative and a bit, well, mystical. I’m talking here about a name on the side of a coach I’ve seen quite a few times in Torquay and Paignton – a name that’s always made me think. And to paraphrase Oscar Wilde’s famous saying about people talking about you, Mystic Isle Travel of Droitwich Spa like to think that there’s only one thing worse than people thinking about them – and that’s no one thinking about them.
