Plans for a ‘controversial’ city centre bus hub in Liverpool were recently given the go ahead.
As part of a vision to reshape the city centre, the hub located on Old Haymarket would see at its busiest point in the day two buses a minute.
Concerns have been raised over the potential damage the hub could inflict on independent enterprises in the area, as well as contribute to pollution and noise problems.
The Liverpool Echo reported that Lib Dem Councillor Mirna Juarez, the only person to vote against the plans, said the new hub would cause ‘chaos in the heart of the city.’
James Noakes, councillor with the responsibility for streetscene, transport and highways and air quality, said the hub would cause disruption but that it was essential to the evolution of the city.
“We accept that this will have a major impact on the area around Old Haymarket,” he said, “but we firmly believe it is necessary and will be hugely beneficial to the city as a whole.”
