John Gelson takes a trip to Scarborough for an update on the seaside town’s open-top bus services
Admiring the sweeping views across the bay to the medieval castle with the sea breeze in your hair, an open top bus ride is as much a part of a trip to Scarborough as an ice cream or a deckchair on the beach.
Yet open top buses only began here in the early 1980s, when NBC subsidiary United decided on a trial conversion of its 109 service around the resort’s North and South Bays, using ex-Southdown ‘Queen Mary’ Leyland PD3s. The trial proved a success and the Queen Marys were replaced by converted ex-Scottish Bus Group Bristol VRs, allowing for one-man operation.
