An open day commemorating 100 years’ continuous use of Stagecoach East’s Bedford depot has raised £1,500 for Cancer Research UK.

One of the oldest working bus garages in the country, the building actually dates back to 1913 as the most northerly outpost of the London General Omnibus Company (LGOC) but its Bedford operations ceased on 22 November 1914 when the building was requisitioned by the military. The depot has been operated by the LGOC, the National Steamcar Company, later the National Omnibus & Transport Co Ltd. and Eastern National Omnibus Co Ltd. from 1930, with operations being transferred to sister company United Counties in 1952. This operator became part of the National Bus Company, and was bought by Stagecoach in 1987.
