Durham is a city packed full of exciting offerings for coach parties. Angela Youngman highlights some of the stand-out options

Perched high on a rocky promontory on an island in the middle of the city, Durham Cathedral and Castle dominate the area. Such a location is no surprise given that the city was uniquely ruled by generations of Prince Bishops intent on maintaining the peace within the north of England. Narrow streets filled with shops and houses wind their way up to and around the Cathedral mound creating one of the most beautiful locations in the country, attracting over 19m visitors annually.

Awarded the status of a World Heritage Site in 1986, Durham has grown steadily in popularity as a tourist destination, with added interest being provided by spectacular events such as the bi-annual Lumiere and a Christmas market.
