Perennially popular, York has always been a magnet for tourists. The towering grandeur of its immense cathedral, along with an extensive Roman, Viking and medieval heritage, ensures that York is a premier destination for touring groups as well as day visitors. According to Visit York, around 6.9m people visit York annually. Such figures are set to increase still further with growing numbers of international visitors keen to explore the city and its medieval shopping streets (known as the Shambles), attracted by its history and festivals such as the Jorvik Viking festival and the annual Christmas Market.
