A new handheld contactless ticket machine option is being introduced by TransMach
To help keep its passengers as safe as possible from Covid-19, Norfolk-based Coach Services has implemented fully contactless, cloud-based ticketing across its network, thanks to a new product from bespoke specialist TransMach.
Weighing under 400g and featuring an in-built thermal printer, the new handheld TM920 was developed by TransMach to provide operators with portable, cloud-based ticketing, that complements the company’s ‘on bus’ TM500 contactless system.
ITSO compliant and compatible with all forms of contactless payment, the TM920 scans and validates operator smartcards and QR codes and logs all boarding data remotely through TransMach’s bespoke back-office system. It also provides automated concession reporting with third party electronic reimbursement. The latest technology, which is being rolled out on Coach Services’ buses, complements TransMach’s TM500 which Coach Services has implemented on selected routes.
TransMach’s Director Minesh Vandra said that almost 90% of smaller, regional operators are still using manual ticketing machines, which as well as adding extra time and administration for drivers, also require significant time for operators to download data and compile concession reports manually for local authorities.
He commented: “Due to Covid-19, contactless ticketing is now paramount for safety but TransMach wanted to do more to support operators and drivers too, by removing the administrative burden. Our on-bus TM500 and portable TM920 systems deliver an all-in-one, flexible solution that also provides real-time passenger information and GPS vehicle tracking. This will enable operators to comply with new laws coming into force in January 2021 regarding the requirement for data on fares and live vehicle location. Our mission is to make transport mobility seamless and more cost-efficient for our customers, so we’re delighted to be supporting Coach Services.”
Established more than 60 years ago, Coach Services operates scheduled routes across Norfolk and Suffolk from its base in Thetford, as well as coach hire, utilising a fleet of low-floor Scania and Wrightbus vehicles. Rob Crawford, Financial Director at Coach Services, said: “Having worked with TransMach over many years, they have proven to be an innovative and reliable ticketing partner that has the interests of small to medium operators at heart. With their support, Coach Services now offers 100% contactless availability across its network, which enables us to provide our growing patronage with additional reassurance. The pandemic caused our business to accelerate its plans to roll out this technology and TransMach helped us to deliver the project in a much shorter timeframe.”
In a move which it says will add further industry support, TransMach has recently launched its own mobile App (Android and iOS), so that operators can access the back-office system whilst on the move.
