Following recent developments, RHA Coaches has issued a statement in regards to what it said was a lack of clarity for the coach sector.
A spokesperson said: “We remain critical of confusing and contradictory Government advice that coach tours should not begin again until at least 17 May.
“This flies in the face of the general view that the Safer Transport Guidance for Operators allows coaches to operate, and indeed has done since it was first published in the spring of 2020.
“We’re aware of a suggestion directed towards the visitor economy sector that private hire trips should not start before 17 May, and while this contradiction is unhelpful for the coach industry, we argue that the current Department for Transport (DfT) guidance takes precedence.
“Our members are worried about this, and we’ve asked for clarity from DfT and are waiting for their reply.
“However, in the absence of anything to confirm a change, or that any other guidance overrules Safer Transport Guidance for Operators, it’s our view that trips booked to depart in the next few weeks can continue to do so.
“We would also urge members to consider carefully before operating occasional journeys such as seaside day trips, as scheduled services.
“Whilst this is a perfectly feasible option, it does require all aspects to be considered and may bring them into scope of PSVAR.
“We continue to talk with DfT on and in the event that there is a change to this, we will update members immediately.”
