East Lothian-based operator Prentice Coaches has introduced a new smartphone app.

Passengers with an Android phone can now download the app to view live vehicle tracking, timetables, contact details, links to social media sites and more. The company hopes to have a version for iPhone available shortly.

Ross Prentice told CBW: “The main reason for having the app is for the live bus tracking. We have recently moved onto the Pinpointers tracking system. Now passengers can find out where our buses are at the press of a couple of buttons.

“We also have all the timetable information and our contact details are very easy to access.

“Furthermore, there is the option to include a live ‘album’ tab which we might add, where people could upload their own photos. This would create more interaction.”

The app also doubles up as a mobile website. When entering the standard site via a mobile devise, users are asked whether they would like to be directed to the app instead.

“We try and stay as up to date as possible with technology when it is of benefit to the business,” Ross added. “For example, we have been using social media for a few years now.

“We decided to introduce the app as we have been using Google Analytics for a while now and the percentage of people who visit the website on mobile devises is rising all the time.

“We can see the tracking on our desktop computers but an effective use is someone standing at the bus stop. It’s all about instilling confidence and trying to attract people out of their cars. East Lothian Council is also very happy with our decision to introduce the app.”
