Jonathan Welch looks back at a century of buses in Blackpool
July saw the well-known municipal operator Blackpool Transport host an event to mark 100 years since the first motor bus service operated by Blackpool Corporation. A series of special events over three days was organised to mark the occasion. On the afternoon of Friday 2 July, heritage bus tours departed from Rigby Road before travelling along much of the route of the first ever bus route operated. Saturday 3 July featured a bus parade, with a convoy of buses travelling from Starr Gate to North Pier, followed by a display of 10 vintage buses at Tower Headland. Free vintage bus rides along the Promenade were laid on in the afternoon, and the evening saw a special ‘Beer & Buses’ event hosted by the Fylde Transport Trust. Sunday 4 featured more heritage tours as well as Zoo and Stanley Park circular tours and free vintage bus rides along the Promenade.
