Go North West driver Bob Dempsey and Engineering Manager Kevin Smith celebrating 100 years of service between them. GO NORTH WEST

Go North West says it is proud to have been able to celebrate the remarkable careers of driver Bob Dempsey and Engineering Manager Kevin Smith, who have each dedicated 50 years to the city’s bus industry, clocking up a magnificent 100 years between them.
Starting in 1975, when flared jeans were in fashion, a pint cost just 15p and the Ford Cortina ruled the roads, Bob and Kevin began their careers in a very different transport world.

Since then, they have been part of generations of change, which has seen operations go from the days of publicly controlled services under SELNEC PTE, through deregulation, and now to the Bee Network, which is once again under the control of the local authority as part of the new franchised system of operation. Bob has spent his career behind the wheel, carrying an estimated two million passengers around the city. Today, he is still on the road, driving at Go North West’s Bolton depot, where his experience and dedication continue to inspire his colleagues as they shape the future of public transport.

Kevin started as an apprentice at Lancashire United Transport Hindley Depot, in the days of crash gearboxes and back-loader buses. Rising through the ranks to Engineering Manager, he has adapted to vast technological changes , which have seen the fleet move from diesel engines to today’s cutting-edge electric buses. Now based at Go North West’s Wigan depot, Kevin leads a team responsible for maintaining over 100 buses, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, and ready for the future.

Reflecting on his career, Kevin said: “When I started, everything was manual. The gears, the doors, even the ticket machines! Now, we’re maintaining some of the most advanced buses in the UK. It’s been incredible to see how the industry has evolved, and I’m proud to have played a part in keeping Greater Manchester moving for 50 years.” Like Kevin, Bob says he has he said: “I love my job. I’ve seen the industry transform over five decades – from the SELNEC PTE days through deregulation and now with the Bee Network. It’s exciting to be part of a future that’s making bus travel better than ever.”

Greater Manchester’s Transport Commissioner Vernon Everitt said: “Bob and Kevin are shining beacons of what public transport is all about. Their unwavering commitment and personal touch have helped connect our communities across Greater Manchester. They are brilliant examples of the spirit of dedication and excellence that our city relies on, and we are truly grateful for their invaluable contributions”.

Go North West Managing Director Nigel Featham added: “Bob and Kevin’s half-centuries of service are not only a testament to their exceptional dedication but also serve as a shining example for our entire team – they embody the very spirit of professional public service. Many congratulations and thanks to them.” With their combined 100 years of service, Bob and Kevin have seen it all, from the golden age of double-deckers to the rise of zero-emission buses.

As Greater Manchester moves towards a more connected, sustainable transport network, Go North West hopes that their legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of drivers and engineers.
