Jonathan Welch reports from the Inclusive Cab Summit organised by Women in Transport and hosted by First Leicester
I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect when I received an invitation to the Inclusive Cab Summit organised by the Diversity & Inclusion Bus Group of Women in Transport. ‘What is an inclusive cab?’ I wondered, and how can it be when every driver is different, and there are so many shapes, sizes, and driving styles out there?
Even more unexpected was the Dennis Dominator parked under the electric bus charging gantries at First’s Leicester depot, standing out in its bright yellow and red Mainline livery, a reminder of how things were some 30 or more years ago. There’s nothing like a bit of (very relevant) nostalgia to start the day, is there?
The Diversity & Inclusion Bus Group was launched in March 2019, with the key aim of promoting and accelerating diversity and inclusion in the bus industry. The group is made up of like-minded peers from across a range of different functions, levels and businesses, all working towards the same objective: to start making a difference. It’s key objectives are to lead change; to promote the benefits of diversity and inclusion and improve perceptions of the bus industry; to attract a diverse workforce which represents the industry’s customer base; and to help companies in the industry to become employers of choice, able to attract the skills and talent from a broad range of backgrounds. The group meets around four times a year and shares learnings, knowledge and expertise.
