A new era for East Yorkshire

East Yorkshire has been part of Go North East since mid-2018, but is run as a stand-alone unit within the company. Jonathan Welch spoke to Area Director Ben Gilligan to find out more about the operations

It was amid the backdrop of ongoing heavy rain and localised flooding across the country that I met East Yorkshire Area Director Ben Gilligan at the operator’s Barry’s Lane depot in Scarborough. Despite being a fairly well-known name within the industry and amongst enthusiasts, the scale of the former East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) operation is often underestimated. With around 700 staff, the Go-Ahead-owned operator has a fleet of around 260 vehicles, running from seven depots across the region. It carries out a range of work, from local scheduled services to National Express contracts, private hire, schools and tendered services. Now operated as an arms-length offshoot of Go North East, CBW sat down with Area Director Ben Gilligan to learn more about the operations and how things have changed in the year and a half since the Go-Ahead take over.
