A new report from the Transport Committee says that more must be done across all public transport sectors
A new Transport Committee report has found that disabled people face a ‘harsh daily reality’ when using transport services, and calls for an overhaul of the regulatory system to ensure disabled users are supported and protected from discrimination. Although heavily focused on rail and air travel, the report also covers buses, taxis and the wider streetscape. The cross-party Committee’s report also finds that progress with addressing disparities between disabled and non-disabled people’s access to services has in some cases gone into reverse since the Covid-19 pandemic, despite policy aspirations to close the gap.
In evidence given to the Committee, people with access needs – including non-visible disabilities such as autism, dementia, severe anxiety and learning disabilities – said that the stresses caused by poor reliability and a lack of assistance discourage them from trying to travel at all.
