Emma Chesworth joins a Caledonian Travel coach trip to somewhere unknown
There’s an air of mystery as we wait at the bus stop on a side street in Stockton one Wednesday morning. We’re looking forward to a good, old-fashioned day out. We just don’t know where we are going.
My partner Mark and I are booked on a mystery coach trip – destination unknown to all but the driver.
We are pick-up point number two of three and there are already a handful of people settled into their seats when we get on. Before we have even gone a mile down the road, one couple are tucking into their sandwiches. At Darlington, we welcome another handful of fellow day-trippers and we are off.
There are 19 of us in total and people spread out throughout the coach, while the driver Richard has fun teasing us with possible destinations. Amongst us there are some obvious old-hands at this mystery trip lark and we learn it’s not unusual for passengers to run a sweepstake on where they may end up.
We’re a mixed bunch of travellers – there are thirty-somethings to septuagenarians with couples, small groups of friends and two solo day-trippers. Over the microphone, Richard asks if anyone has a preferred destination in mind? “Anywhere as long as it’s not Blackpool,” shouts one man. “Somewhere with shops,” requests a woman.
