The Arriva Group, which operates across 11 European countries, has delivered a strong start under its new ownership, generating revenues of €2.5 billion in the seven months to 31 December 2024, and future contracted revenue of €16 billion, according to its recently-published annual report for 2024.

The report shows that the Group invested €285 million in its fleet during the seven-month period, including in zero-emission vehicles and related infrastructure. In 2025 the company expects to invest at least €400 million in zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure for contracts starting during 2025, and says its on-going investment in fleet transition underscores the Group’s commitment to decarbonisation across its operations. By the end of 2025, Arriva expects its zero-emission bus fleet to have doubled to around 1,300 vehicles.

The 2024 report is Arriva’s first as a standalone company following its acquisition by I Squared Capital in May last year. Commenting on the results, Executive Chair David Martin said: “Our strong and diverse portfolio of businesses across the UK and Europe positions us well in an attractive and growing market driven by significant mobility megatrends.

“We operate with an unparalleled geographical reach across Europe in both bus and rail and we want to lead the shift towards sustainable mobility. Our business is strong and well diversified by geography, mode and contract type, providing our shareholder with good visibility of future revenues, coupled with a healthy pipeline of future tenders and ambitions to grow both in existing and new markets.”

The UK remains Arriva’s biggest single market, with significant interests in both the rail and bus sectors. Its UK rail business unit generated revenues of €758 million in the seven-month period, employed 5,270 people and had an order book of €2.5 billion, while the bus business unit generated revenues of €639 million, employed 13,100 people and had an order book of €2.6 billion.

Arriva’s Mainland Europe business unit operates across nine countries and had revenues of €539 million, an order book of €5.3 billion and employed 12,790 people, whilst its standalone Netherlands business unit generated revenues of €469 million, an order book of €5.6 billion and employed 4,780 people.
