BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show launches ‘Beat the Bus’

Bus speed figures released by Transport for London’s in the four weeks from 29 May to 26 June showed that route 14, which operates between Putney Heath and Russell Square, was the slowest on the network. It had an average speed of just 6.2mph.

BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show DJ Greg James picked up on this fact on 16 February and arranged a new feature called Beat the Bus, which even had it own jingle. On the morning of 17 February at 0740hrs, teacher Annie Bond used the service 14 for the first time for the purpose of the race, joining the bus on the Fulham Road. Bus enthusiast and supermarket delivery driver Reece from Norwich contacted Greg the day before and arranged to head to London the following day to try and ‘Beat the Bus’ by walking.
