Brothers Mark and Andy Hayball built Beeline of Warminster into a 38-vehicle operation primarily on contract work, a strategy they’ve pursued successfully for several decades as they explain to Andy Izatt
Beeline of Warminster is one of those unassuming operators that goes about its business attracting little attention. Today, the main thrust of its work is school transport, but there was a time when it was responsible for moving thousands of troops all over the country, as it is located in Wiltshire on the edge of Salisbury Plain.
“There is competition in this area, but it’s fairly limited because of our rural location,” explained Mark Hayball, who built the company up with his younger brother Andy. “To the west of Warminster is Frome, but that’s Somerset and the dynamic is very different when it comes to how you would pitch your work. To the south is Shaftesbury which is more Dorset facing. To the east is Salisbury, but that’s 25 miles away. To the north is Trowbridge, but that’s still about 10 miles.
“We could run 50 or 60 coaches. The work is there, but while the size of the fleet would increase, I’m not sure it would be the same for our profit margin. We operate 38 vehicles and that provides us with a good standard of living.”
