This year’s Imberbus is expected to be the biggest yet, say organisers. Martin Curtis reports
Preparations for next month’s Imberbus event, to be held on Saturday 17 August, are well advanced with up to 40 buses scheduled to take part. Some 20 operators and private owners will provide vehicles, at their own expense, for the event, where all profits are donated to a range of worthy causes; most beneficiaries are connected with the armed forces or local community charities and organisations.
Last year record numbers attended, and to cope with similar demand this year an intensive service between Warminster railway station and Imber Church will be provided.
The annual Imberbus operation commenced 15 years ago using just four London Routemaster buses. It operates across the normally restricted areas of Salisbury Plain where residents were evacuated from their homes in Imber village during World War 2 in preparation for D-Day. They were never allowed to return and today only St Giles church remains intact. The church will be the focal point of activity for the special bus services running on the day.
