2025 marks the 50th anniversary of charity Bus Users UK, which aims to improve access to transport. Set up in 1975 by Caroline Cahm, the organisation was formalised in the 1980s during bus deregulation and known as the National Federation of Bus Users. Its complaints handling service was officially launched in 1985 with the backing of the Confederation of Passenger Transport.

Half a century later, Bus Users UK describes itself as ‘a powerhouse of passenger advocacy.’ As the only approved Alternative Dispute Resolution body for bus and coach passengers and a registered charity in England and Scotland, Bus Users UK says it is on a mission to connect communities through reliable, inclusive, accessible transport.

Each year, the organisation handles complaints from thousands of passengers across the UK, collaborates with service providers to raise standards, and drives improvements and access to travel. Through its events, campaigning and advocacy work, Bus Users UK aims to bridge the gap between communities and decision-makers, ensuring the voices of passengers are heard locally and nationally.

Claire Walters, Chief Executive of Bus Users UK since 2012 and Disability and Access Ambassador for the bus and coach industry, said: “I’m so proud of the people who have given their time, energy and skills to help us reach this landmark anniversary and make Bus Users UK a recognised force for good. The future for public, shared and sustainable travel is bright and we remain committed in our mission to removing barriers and shaping transport that truly works for everyone.”

Chair of Bus Users UK and a keen advocate for shared, sustainable transport, Jennie Martin MBE added: “The work of Bus Users UK contributes so much to enabling everybody, regardless of economic status or physical ability, to get to where they need to be in order to do what they need to do. Our focus on inclusive and accessible travel never wavers and we look forward to continuing to champion shared and sustainable travel which supports communities and empowers individuals.”
