The widow of 58 year old bus driver Keith Rollinson, who was killed by a teenager at Elgin bus station, has expressed dismay that his attacker will be entitled to retain his free under-22s bus pass when he finishes his sentence. The youth was aged 15 at the time of the attack in 2024, and will be aged 21 when released from prison following a short sentence imposed because of his early guilty plea and young age, meaning that he will still be entitled to a free travel pass under the Scottish Government scheme.
Driver Rollinson’s wife Susan has called for the Scottish Government to remove free travel passes from those who are abusive to staff, a call also backed by CPT.
MSPs agreed last year to consider suspending passes for passengers who abuse drivers, but no progress has been made on the motion. Speaking to the Daily Mail, a Transport Scotland spokesman said: “The Cabinet Secretary for Transport met Unite union representatives to confirm that she is committed to ensuring a full range of options are available to support the police, local authorities and bus operators to tackle this issue.”
