A new version of Volvo’s Intelligent Speed Assist is being used by Stagecoach, reports Steven Knight
Stagecoach East has implemented the Volvo Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology across its Cambridgeshire Busway fleet, which carries around 3 million passengers a year.
Jointly with Volvo, Stagecoach has developed a bespoke version of the Volvo ISA system which, following extensive development and testing, involving a trial commissioning on Volvo B8L/Enviro400XLB 13912, has now been commissioned on its core Euro VI Busway fleet. Unlike the speed regulation systems which have been implemented by Transport for London, where isolation of the throttle prevents acceleration above the relevant speed limits, the Busway system can actively slow the vehicle down to match vehicle speed to pre-defined speed limits.
The system being used by Stagecoach will automatically engage the vehicle’s gearbox retarder to slow the vehicle to the appropriate speed limit, whilst also deactivating the throttle. Once the system starts to slow the vehicle, the brake lights will be illuminated to alert any following vehicle that the vehicle’s speed is being reduced.
The project has been led at Stagecoach by Dan Smith, Operations Manager at Fenstanton depot, and depot Controller Alex Vose who have worked closely with Volvo and have overlayed the relevant speed restriction zones onto Google Maps.
