In the first of a two part feature, Richard Walter braved a sunny, but very windy day half way up Dundee Law as Xplore Dundee launched its new zero-emission double-deck buses and found out what McGill’s Group has planned in the coming months
Dundee Law is a hill in the centre of Dundee, Scotland, and is the highest point in the city. The Law is what remains of a volcanic sill, which is the result of volcanic activity around 400 million years ago. With a large war memorial at its summit, it is the most prominent feature on the local skyline. Xplore Dundee chose the location to unveil three of its new fleet of 12 zero-emission electric double-decker buses which are marking a significant leap forward in sustainable public transport for the City of Discovery.
Unfortunately, the access road and turning space at the summit were just too tight for the buses to negotiate but there was space at the half way point to park them which still offered an amazing view of Dundee behind, and allowed some what I’m sure will be excellent drone footage to be taken. The accompanying gale aside, the sunny skies made for a magnificent inspection of the new buses. The three drivers chosen for the event all praised their performance, even if the lack of engine noise had been a surprise. The fleet launch was attended by Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Finance and Local Government Shona Robison MSP, and Dundee City Council Leader Mark Flynn who were also given a tour of the charging facilities at the depot afterwards.
